WeChat available for Nokia Asha – Review and How to Download

$

WeChat, the cross-platform messaging app was recently launched for Asha Full touch phones. A less-advanced version was previously available only for keypad based Nokia X3-02/C3-01. The new redesigned application also brings the ability to record and send short voice messages from within the application.

Looks and Functionality:

The app is well designed and does make you feel like you’re using it on a smartphone. It is perfectly optimized for the screen size and hence all the functions are easily accessible with easy taps. Making full use of the screen estate, the app properly arranges the available contacts and active chats.

Chat Conversations

Chat messages are properly sorted in the conversation view which makes reading and replying easy. The app does not come with any external keyboard and uses the default keyboard of the phone which IMO is the best implementation as there’s always some sort of problem using the external keyboards.

Besides written messages, users can also send photos by clicking from the camera directly or choosing a photo already saved in the gallery.

Another great option that the app provides is the ability to record and send voice messages from within the application.

To send a voice message, just hold down the call (green) key and speak. Release the key when you’re done recording.

Contacts:

You can easily import your phone contacts into the application and directly start a conversation. Or else you can manually add a contact through his/her WeChat ID or phone number.

There is also an option to link and import your contacts from QQ messenger and use QQ-related features on WeChat.

How to: Access Hidden Files of Nokia Asha and Delete Useless/Demo Data

$

nokia-asha-familyNokia Asha phones are quite easy to use and well built, but one problem that almost every Nokia Asha (or any other S40)  phone user faces is that Nokia bundles some pictures, videos, music, apps, games with the phone which can’t be deleted or moved to the SD Card.

Some of you will have questions like “What’s wrong with that?” Well the answer is simple. Most of these Asha/S40 phones have a low internal memory and these useless apps may make it quite hard for the user to find enough space to save other stuffs such as Messages and Calendar data which can’t be saved onto the memory card. So although the phone has a pretty satisfying internal memory, some bloatware will never allow you to access that.

How to access the internal/hidden file system of Asha and other S40 phones:

Asha phones can only run Java apps which don’t have enough permission to access and make changes to the internal files of the phone. So the process can only be done on a PC running Windows XP or higher. If you have a Windows PC, follow the steps below:

Make sure that latest Nokia Suite is installed on your phone, but it is not running in the background. We only need the connectivity drivers from Nokia Suite.
  1. Download MobiMB software. Link Here
  2. Double Click to open the downloaded file (MobiMB.exe) and choose the location where you wanna extract the setup files to.
  3. Browse to the folder where you extracted files in the previous step and run setup.exe
  4. Continue with the setup by accepting license agreement. Leave the Product Activation fields blank and continue.
  5. Keep the shortcut at the desktop and finish the setup.
  6. Now connect your phone to your PC and run the MobiMB Mobile Media Browser shortcut from the desktop.
  7. Click on Start MobiMB.
  8. Now click on File> Settings. Next choose Add a new Connection> Cable Connection> Nokia native USB phones> CA-101 cable (Micro-USB). Press OK

    Add connection - MobiMb browser

    Adding a new connection

  9. Wooh!! You’ll be presented with your phone’s file-system. Access and add/remove the files you want. Read below if you don’t know what to delete.

    MobiMB - Browse Phone

    Browse hidden files

Which files can I delete without the risk of malfunctioning of the phone?

MobiMB is a very advanced software and deletion of important files can lead to phone becoming unstable and hence crashing. So which files to delete? Most probably, your aim is to delete the junk files to free up the phone memory. So you should delete these files:

  • MobiMB> Gallery: Delete all that you don’t want in your phone. There’s no risk here. Some items cannot be deleted and the software will say “Error”. Skip such files and move to the next. You can delete pictures, music, videos, themes, wallpapers, tones, graphics and some other stuff located in the gallery.
  • MobiMB> Games and Apps: (Includes /collections and /games) You can delete all the pre-installed games and apps that you don’t need in your phone. For games and apps, you can delete the jar and jad files, but you might be unable to delete the folder for private files of such apps. Just ignore it as it does not contain any data larger than a few KBs.
  • MobiMB> C:> MenuApps: This folder includes the games/apps which were pre-installed to your phone’s menu or the main filesystem of the phone. In most cases, you shouldn’t mess with this folder, but in case you need to delete a bundled app, say Nimbuzz or Nokia Xpress browser, you can delete the jar and jad files of such apps.
  • That’s it. Don’t mess with anything else. If you’re a explorer or a power user, you’re always free to play with the rest of the files to see the logic behind them and their usage.

Phones supported by this repack of MobiMB:

Almost all phones released prior to 2013, including Asha 305, 306, 308, 309, 310, 311 and others

Nokia Xpress Browser for Asha Updated; Brings Multi-Window Support

Nokia Xpress Browser which has been available for the Asha and other S40 phones since long has just received a new update which adds the much awaited tabbed browsing. The update pushes the version number to 3.1.0 which previously was somewhere around 2.3.0.

Nokia Xpress Browser uses intermediate Nokia proxy servers to optimize web pages based on the capabilities and screen size of the device. The proxy servers also compress data by up to 90% to reduce data transmission charges for the mobile user.

The updated Nokia Xpress Browser (v 3.1) is at par with what has been introduced in the new phones (such as the 501) running the Asha OS. The tabbed browsing is smooth and the visual effects which appear up while switching between tabs are quite appealing.

Users can browse simultaneously in up to 6 windows/tabs. Tabs can be easily switched by clicking/tapping on the icon located in the bottom (for touch phones) or towards the top (for qwerty phones).

Tip: To close a window, long tap on it in the multi-window page and tap on the red cross.

Updating Nokia Xpress Browser to version 3.1

Coming to the updates, the updates are delivered through a notification within the browser. So you’ll probably see a pop-up notification about the update while browsing your favorite sites. If Nokia Xpress Browser is installed in a directory which you can access, you can update it by pressing Options> Update Version

Lastly, if the update is not available in any way, it is most probably because your Nokia Device was not eligible to be updated to the latest version because of certain hardware and API limitations.

Here’s a small gallery from the updated browser :)

WeChat which debuted for Nokia Asha range around 3 months before has recently received a significant update. The update which pushes the version to 1.5 brings many UI tweaks and takes the app more closer to its android version. Besides this, the update also makes the app available on even more devices. Although not all of the Asha/S40 devices are supported, the range has still increased.

Wechat for Nokia Asha allows you to send voice messages as well as text messages. You also have the option to add graphics, emoticons and pictures to beautify and enhance your Wechat experience.  You can read our initial Wechat experience over here

Nearby Mode – Find new friends around you

The Wechat 1.5 update also adds the nearby mode (a replica of Look Around of Android version) which in a nutshell is a feature to help you in finding and interacting with new people who are living nearby.  As the app needs to know your physical location first, this will only work in Nokia Asha devices which support positioning via the cell tower location.

Updating Wechat to 1.5 on Nokia Asha

To update the application, all you need to open Nokia Store client on your phone and it will show available updates. Else, if you previously installed Wechat from some other way besides Nokia Store, you can delete the older version and re-install the new one form the store.

Download the latest update to your Wechat client on your Full Touch Asha phones such as the Asha 311 or Asha 501 now. Other device owners must retry if they can find the new Wechat client for their phone in the Nokia Store.

Extend WhatsApp Subscription on Nokia Asha (S40) Phones

WhatsApp is a great Online Messaging platform which actually keeps your connected anytime and anywhere, provided if you have internet connectivity. WhatsApp has been available for Nokia Asha and other S40 phones since a long time, but as per WhatsApp’s terms, the free subscription is only valid till 1 year and all the users need to renew the service at regular flat rate of $1 per year. But there’s a cute exception for Nokia Asha users. Reed below

Extending the WhatsApp Subscription

Subscription of WhatsApp for Nokia S40 phones can be easily extended even without the need of a credit/debit card. You don’t need to pay from your phone balance either. Follow the steps below to extend your WhatsApp subscription.

  1. Use WhatsApp for Messaging your friends.
  2. Keep using WhatsApp and stay connected with your friends.
  3. Your subscription will be renewed automatically for Free at the end of 1st year :-P

Surprising? Yes that’s true. WhatsApp team is charging nothing for using the great WhatsApp messenger on Nokia Asha phones. In simple words, WhatsApp is completely free for use of Nokia Asha phones. This was confirmed by an email reply from WhatsApp support. For those who can’t believe, a screenshot resides below.

Whatsapp support replyThey might plan to include some sort of in-app payment system within the application at a later stage, but for now they don’t have any. This is why there’s no account info column inside the WhatsApp application on Nokia S40 phones.

In any case if your subscription is not automatically renewed, you can delete your account and create a new one which will reset your profile. But you will lose your chat history and connected contacts in such a case. But no worries. WhatsApp support team is always there to help you out in case your face any issues.

Nokia Xpress Browser which compresses the content to save on data usage and enable quicker page-loads has today received a new update which pushes the version from 3.2 to 3.7.0.0.11. As the version number has shifted considerably, it seems to have brought in many quality improvements.

Improvements Noticed in version 3.7.0

Just like every time, there is no change-log available. So here’s just a summary of the improvements that we noticed. If you have something to add, let us know below.

  • Faster Page Loads – Takes half the time than what it used to take previously.
  • Improved Sharing Features – The Facebook and Twitter share features have received some improvements.
  • Better management of multiple windows.
  • Improvements to page rendering – Complex websites render up better.

Updating Nokia Xpress Browser to Version 3.7.0

The update is available for most of the previous Asha phones including the full-touch ones such as the Asha 311 as well as the recently launched Asha 501 which did not receive the previous update of 3.2.

For most of the users, an update notification will show up within the browser as a pop-up notification asking you to update. The update might not be available in all the regions at the same time. So if you haven’t received the notification, you should wait for a while and try again after a couple of days.

If it still does not show up, you can manually update by opening http://download.browser.ovi.com in your phone’s browser to reach the download page.

Tag Friends in a Status or Comment on Facebook Mobile Website

$

0

Facebook allows you to tag your friends or a public page in your status and comments and anyone can be easily tagged if you are using Facebook on your PC or instead on a Smartphone (Android, iOS or WP), but there is no way provided by Facebook to tag people via its basic mobile website (except for photos and check-in) and hence keeps millions of feature phone (like Nokia Asha, Samsung REX and other entry level phones) users away from this great feature.

However there is a way using which you can tag your friends and pages in your statuses or comments even from a basic feature phone. All you need is a little bit of effort and a browser which can copy and paste text.

Tagging Facebook Friends on Feature Phones

To tag your friends on your Nokia Asha or any other feature phone, you need a browser with copy paste support. Opera Mini or UC Browser can easily do this and then most of the Nokia Asha phones have an inbuilt clipboard with support for copying and pasting text.

  1. Open m.facebook.com and login if you are not already logged in.
  2. Open your friend’s profile (whom you wanna tag) and copy his profile URL (the page address). It will look something like
    https://m.facebook.com/singhnsk?refid=46
  3. Now you need to find the numeric profile ID of your friend. There are two ways to do that. Choose whichever you find easy.
    1. Edit the Facebook profile URL of your friend and replace m.facebook.com with graph.facebook.com. Leave the rest of the URL intact.
    2. Else, just open findmyfacebookid.com and paste the Profile URL of your friend (copied in step 2) into the text-box available there and click on Lookup numeric ID…
  4. Copy the 16-didit numeric ID which shows up. If you’ve used the graph replacement in the URL (in step 3), copy the numeric code (without quotes) written next to “id”.
  5. Open Facebook again and paste this numeric code into the textbox where you type your status.
  6. Prefix an @[ in front of the numeric id and a :] at its end. When properly done, it will look something like this:
    @[602287436455165:]
  7. Add all the text you want to add into the status or comment. You can add text in front of the numeric ID to push the tagged name a little behind. A properly done status will look something like this:
Hey @[100004690410261:]. Just testing out something for @[602287436455165:] bro.
  8. Publish the comment or status when you’re done editing it. The above example looks like the following when published:Facebook Status with a Tag

You can keep the Numeric IDs of your favorite contacts as a bookmark in your browser so that you can quickly copy and paste it whenever needed. If your phone supports native copying and pasting, you can also use this in the Facebook app on your feature phone.
You can also follow the similar tutorial to tag your friends while using Facebook on SMS. All you’ll need is the numeric ID of your friend’s Facebook profile.

Use Nokia Asha 5xx Phone as Modem to Access Internet on PC

$

Nokia Asha 5xx series devices are not supported by Nokia Suite or the Nokia PC Suite, hence it becomes a little bit tricky to connect the phone to the PC as a modem to access internet on the PC. Phones like the Asha 503 which come with 3G facility can be perfect to get internet access on the PC/Laptop. Besides the 5xx series phones, this also applies to all other Nokia Asha phones which are not supported by Nokia Suite.

Connecting Nokia Asha phone to PC for using Internet

  1. You need the Nokia Connectivity Cable Drivers for connecting the phone to the PC. Windows will not recognize the phone and the modem unless you have the Connectivity Cable Drivers installed on your Windows PC. Download the NCC Drivers by clicking here.
  2. Upon downloading, open the download file and follow the usual steps to finish installing the drivers on your PC. Restart your PC after the installation has finished.
  3. Now connect your Nokia Asha phone to the PC. Select ‘Modem‘ mode on your phone. Windows will start installing the required drivers. Wait until the process finishes.
    installing device windows 8.1
  4. Now open Control Panel and select Network and Internet. Now click on Network and Sharing Center.
  5. Once here, click on Set up a new connection or network.
    set up new connection win8.1
  6. Select Connect to the internet. It is usually the first option. Press Next.
  7. Click on Dial-up (connect using a Dial-up modem or ISDN) in the How do you want to connect? dialog.
how do you want to connect win8
  8. In the dial-up phone number field, enter *99# or *99***1#
  9. Leave the username and password field blank, except if your ISP/Carrier requires a password to initiate a connection. Reach your carrier support if blank fields don’t work.
    dial up connection form windows
  10. Click on Create and windows will dial the connection to test it for you.
  11. That’s it. Browse the internet thereafter.

The next time you want to connect to the internet, just connect your phone to the PC and open the Networking and Sharing center. You can dial the connection from there.

How to Update?

To update the phone software, follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Scroll down to Phone Update
  3. Tap on Check for Updates. If you can’t see this text, just turn the Check via Mobile Data knob to off and again turn it on. This will force an update check.
  4. When new update is detected, tap on Update to start downloading the update.
  5. Wait along while the update is being downloaded. I’d recommend using WiFi to download the update as it is both quicker and ensures the files are downloaded properly.

Alternatively, you can also follow our previous tutorial to update using your PC.

Microsoft to Discontinue Nokia Asha, X and Feature Phones

In a series of news, Microsoft’s Stephen Elop has officially announced that Nokia X series devices will be discontinued (we never recommended them anyways)  and the product designs may be relaunched with Windows Phone on the board. Here’s a quote of what Elop said in his email to the employees:

We will be particularly focused on making the market for Windows Phone. In the near term, we plan to drive Windows Phone volume by targeting the more affordable smartphone segments, which are the fastest growing segments of the market, with Lumia. In addition to the portfolio already planned, we plan to deliver additional lower-cost Lumia devices by shifting select future Nokia X designs and products to Windows Phone devices. We expect to make this shift immediately while continuing to sell and support existing Nokia X products.

It’s unknown if the already announced Nokia X2 will ever make way to the market or it will be discontinued straightway. Chances are that it will still be sold, but without any support.

Feature Phone and Asha entering Maintenance Mode

If a Tip received by NPU is true, Microsoft’s Jo Harlow has allegedly sent a memo internally with the following important context:

All the efforts now be focused on Windows Phone and Nokia X, Asha and Feature phones will be put in “maintenance mode” for an eventual shut down of services during the period of next 18 months. There will be no new features or updates for these platforms and developer engagement will be ramped down.

If this memo is true by any means, we’re finally heading towards end of Nokia branded devices. Microsoft initially licensed the Nokia brand for over 10 years for feature phones, but they have already started making plans to discontinue the same. Feature phones and Asha have been the only Nokia devices which were selling in great volumes, but Microsoft seems unsatisfied with the sales.

Nokia MixRadio and Xpress Browser are also supposed to be put into Maintenance Mode receiving no more updates and finally heading towards final shutdown.

So basically there will hardly be any new announcements for the dirt cheap feature phones, mid ranged Asha phones and the Nokia X devices. Lumia will be the only point of focus for the new Microsoft Mobiles division.

Trying to reset your Nokia Asha (s40) Mobile Phone, but couldn’t find the right security code to proceed? Or are you trying to secure your phone using Security Keyguard, but don’t know the current security code? Many websites provide Master Codes, but they never work and they never will. You’ll learn how to find the security code of your Nokia Asha (S40) phone in the context below.

Using NSSPro to Find the Security Code of Nokia Asha/S40

NSS Pro is a Nokia Unlock utility which has been around for a long time. If properly connected, it can find the security code of most of the Nokia Asha and S40 devices which were released before 2013 and had a Mico/Mini USB slot.

Requirements
  1. NSS Pro software. Download here
  2. Nokia Connectivity Cable Drivers. Download here
  3. Nokia S40 phone having a USB slot
  4. Windows PC
  5. USB Data Cable

Please note that this tutorial is only for the users who have forgotten the security code and their phone is not locked by the security keyguard. If yours is locked, you need to flash it using Nokia Care Suite which will reset it to factory settings and delete all user data.

Procedure:

  1. Download and install the Nokia Connectivity Cable Drivers on your PC. If already installed, you can skip this step.
  2. Download NSSPro. Extract the zip file and then open NSSPro.exe
  3. Connect your phone to the PC using a USB Data Cable. Choose OVI Suite/PC Suite/Nokia Suite as the connectivity mode on the phone. If Drivers start installing, wait for them to be installed before you proceed.
  4. In the NSSPro window, click on Detect towards the bottom of the window. The program will detect the phone’s mode and other things that it needs.
  5. Click on User Code in control panel at towards the right side of the Log.
  6. The program will check the phone’s tables and provide you with a Possible Code field. The digits in front of this is your security code.
  7. Change your security code, setup security keyguard or reset your phone. Do whatever you want to.

It should work for most of the users out there, but in case it doesn’t work for you, make sure you’re not using one of the newer phones (Nokia Asha 5xx) and try again on a different PC.

Mail App on Nokia Asha and Symbian Phones will Stop Working starting 17th November

Microsoft is killing existing Nokia services one after another and this time it is the Nokia Messaging Service (aka. NMS). Devices which made use of NMS to send and receive emails will stop syncing the mailboxes starting November 17th as Microsoft decides to kill the service. However, the kill doesn’t affect all existing Nokia phones equally.

Nokia Asha and S40 Phones (excluding Asha 5xx Series)

Nokia Messaging Service Discontinue WarningThe Mail app will become completely useless on the Nokia Asha and Series 40 devices starting November 17th as it will fail to sync with the mailbox and fetch or send any new mails. Users however will be able to access their mailboxes using the web interface of their mail providers, but that isn’t as easy and quickly accessible as was the Mail app.

Nokia Symbian Phones

Symbian users will still be able to make use of their email apps, but not to the same extent as they used to. Users need to make certain changes to their mailbox settings and if they don’t, the Mail app will not fetch any new emails starting November 17 (November 20th for some Symbian devices). The changes involve removing the Mailboxes from the app and re-adding them using the direct IMAP or POP settings from the mail provider.

To know how to do these changes, read the instructions available here.

Nokia X, Lumia and Nokia Asha 5xx Phones

Nokia X series, Lumia smartphones and the Nokia Asha 5xx series devices (500, 501, 502 and 503) will continue to send and receive emails normally as the Mail apps on these devices do not make use of Nokia Messaging Service and hence are safe from any damage (as of now).

The discontinuation of NMS does not affect SMS and MMS services in any way. You can still continue to send and receive text messages the same way as you used to.

All these changes will directly impact Nokia’s brand value as it results in dissatisfied customers. Probably Nokia should have taken control of these Mail services and Nokia Store to keep them alive for another few years while the users of these devices switch over to some newer devices.

WhatsApp has extended the support for Nokia’s Asha phones until the end of 2017. This is a good news since there are still a large number of Nokia Asha users. It is good to know that WhatsApp still cares about its users after being taken over by Facebook. WhatsApp previously mentioned that the support for […]
